Additional Passions & Professions

I have never really been able to choose just one thing to do or be; in the wise words of Walt Whitman:

“I contain multitudes.”

For much of my life, the message I felt like I received from society was that if I didn’t choose one thing to focus on, I wouldn’t be able to succeed in anything I did because I was trying to do too many things. While there is some validity to not spreading oneself too thin, I am also a passionate advocate of doing everything you can in this lifetime – we only get one.

So this page delves into my passions and professions that fall outside of my music career:
photography, user experience/product research, design, & strategy, arts & crafts,
and wedding consulting.

Photography

Happilee Sami Lee Photography

In 2011, I got an iPhone and quickly became enamored with the ability to take pictures anytime, anywhere. I loved it so much that in 2012, I got my first DSLR camera, a Canon Rebel T3i, with the help of my parents for my birthday. I began truly falling love with photography, with the ability to capture a moment in time and be able to admire it forever. To this day, I still use that camera and still take pictures. My favorite things to shoot are nature, animals, engagements, family photos, and senior/graduation photos.

User Experience (UX) / Product Research, Design,
& Strategy

Current Role:
Senior Product Strategist, Method

When I went to college, I knew I wanted to study Cognitive Science because I was so fascinated by the brain and human behavior, but I did not have any clue what industry I wanted to go into after college. I explored the ideas of being a criminal psychologist for the FBI, doing music supervision for film and TV, working in social media marketing, and more. But one day in my senior year, during my time as an assistant science teacher for an after-school program that helped encourage young girls to feel more comfortable in STEM, an exceptional woman came to visit our classroom to teach the girls about the realm of STEM that she worked in: UX Design. Even as a 21 year old, I had never heard of UX either, but with every word she said, sharing how UX is all about empathy, understanding your users, and problem solving to find the best solutions for them, I became more and more excited. It was like a lightbulb went off in my head – I had finally figured out what field I wanted to pursue. I spent the rest of my senior year of college speaking with her, researching how to break into the field, and figuring out what kind of education or experience I would need to do so. I ended up finding a position as a UX intern and was fortunate enough to be trained by the lovely folks at that company. Ultimately I was able to stay on with the company as a Jr. UX Designer, and later even able to drop the Jr. title. A few years later, I transitioned my career a bit more toward strategy and away from design itself and found myself in my current role doing product/UX strategy work at Method, a digital design and engineering consulting company.

Arts & Crafts

HSL Studio

I have always loved creative endeavors and have explored many avenues of them. I paint, make jewelry, create resin art, make wax seals, design birthday cards, and am currently learning to sew. Wax seal making is a favorite activity of mine, and I have even had the honor of making wax seals for some friends' weddings. I find it to be a very relaxing pastime. I decided one day that it might be fun to start selling some of my art to make a little extra money on the side, and thus HSL Studio was born (HSL stands for Happilee Sami Lee, of course).

Wedding Consulting

I Do Consulting Co.

I have always loved weddings - I LOVE love! In the last few years, in my free time, I started accumulating A LOT of random knowledge about the intricate logistics of weddings (thanks Instagram!). I always just thought, "Ok, one day when the time comes for me to get married, I'll be the most prepared bride ever." But I realized, not only should I share the knowledge I have gained, but I LOVE sharing it! That is how I Do Consulting Co. came to be and I'm so excited to set you and your partner up for success on your big day! And now that I am planning my own wedding, I have even more tips and tricks for anyone who wants them!
